Traditional Dentures vs Overdentures

There are a growing number of options for dental patients who have experienced the loss of one or more teeth. Dental patients, therefore, have a lot more to learn when considering which option is right for their dental replacement. Dentures continue to be one of the most popular and affordable forms of dental replacement, but even within this category of prosthesis, there are multiple options. One of the newest styles of denture is overdentures, and they’re growing in popularity. Even better, they’re an integration of two types of dental replacement technology, dentures and implants.

What’s The Difference Between Dentures and Overdentures?

If you’ve ever seen a set of teeth resting in a glass of water on your grandparent’s bedside, you know what traditional dentures are. Utilizing an acrylic base in which artificial teeth are set, this form of denture is held in place by messy adhesives, unreliable natural suction, or a combination of the two. Overdentures, on the other hand, are held in place by clipping onto a series of dental implants set into your jaw. This makes them far more stable than traditional dentures, putting an end to embarrassing dental slips and accidental damage caused by them falling out.

More About The Implants Overdentures Are Mounted On

We mentioned previously that overdentures are secured in place by clipping on to a set of implants secured in your jawbone. These implants are formed out of titanium, a metal known for its durability and ability to stimulate the growth of bone. This property means that your jawbone will actually be stronger for having the titanium implant, and due to a process known as osseointegration, it will become a permanent part of your jaw over time. Osseointegration is the process by which titanium bonds directly with the natural bone in your jaw.

Why Get Overdentures

Overdentures provide an overall superior experience for those who receive them. Due to being secured in place on the aforementioned dental implants, your teeth will never slip out of place. This makes it easier to enjoy your favorite foods without mishap. Even more importantly, overdentures don’t cover your palate like traditional dentures. This restores a level of tactile enjoyment of food that is typically lost, making the enjoyment of crunchy vegetables and meats easier. They also don’t interfere with your speech in any way.

Traditional dentures are known for causing notable alterations in patients’ ability to pronounce “s” and “f” sounds. The titanium implants used to secure them in place do more than just strengthen your jaw; they also prevent the process known as ‘resorption.’ This process involves the body reabsorbing bone that used to hold teeth in place, resulting in multiple complications that include having to get your traditional dentures refitted.
