Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are an incredibly powerful cosmetic dentistry treatment. Thin pieces of porcelain are customized in appearance and structure to conceal multiple aesthetic problems at the same time. The result is a flawless smile that looks natural, that looks like a VIP. For our patients at Bethesda Family Dentistry, we create veneer smile makeovers using porcelain or resin shells.

Problems Fixed By Porcelain Veneers

If you’ve ever admired a celebrity’s white smile, don’t be jealous that they hit the DNA jackpot. Most of them have simply pursued their own good fortune and undergone cosmetic dentistry. Often, they have porcelain veneers for a bright, symmetrical smile. Isn’t it nice to know you can enjoy the same kind of treatment as a celeb?

Porcelain veneers are recommended for all types of smile problems, but are often considered a great solution for the following types of teeth:

  • Crooked
  • Damaged
  • Discolored
  • Gapped
  • Irregularly shaped
  • Misaligned
  • Misshapen
  • Stained
  • Worn enamel

The Porcelain Veneers Procedure

It typically takes two dental appointments to plan, prepare, and carry out the veneers procedure. Here is what you can expect along the way:

  • Design: You and your Bethesda dentist will review the particulars of your smile and the elements of your veneers that will create a white, flawless smile. This includes making decisions about the size, shape, length, and color of each veneer, as well as the type of veneer. Choices include porcelain, resin, traditional, and no-prep veneers.
  • Prep: A small portion of natural tooth enamel is filed down and reshaped to ensure that a veneer will fit properly without looking bulky. This step is not always needed – no-prep veneers, for instance, do not call for any invasive preparation, simply a light sanding and teeth cleaning to remove any bumps and surface imperfections.
  • Creation: A dental impression is taken after prep is complete and this is set to the dental lab so your customized veneers can be fabricated. Temporary veneers may be adhered to your teeth while you wait for your permanent ones to be ready.
  • Bonding: When the veneers are ready, you will return to the dental office for the application. The thin porcelain shields are checked to make sure fit and color are correct, then they are bonded to the front surface of your visible teeth and hardened in place with a special curing light.

Porcelain Veneers - are you a good candidate for getting veneers?

Are You A Good Candidate For Veneers?

If you’re a good candidate for veneers, all your cosmetic dental complaints can be concealed in one procedure. That’s an amazing, long-lasting way to improve your smile. First, though, your Bethesda dentist must conduct a dental exam to determine whether you are a good candidate for the procedure.

Wanting an amazing new smile isn’t enough to qualify you for this cosmetic dentistry treatment. You must have a healthy and strong foundation first – that means no tooth decay, infections, or signs of gum disease. If these problems are present, you’re not disqualified from veneers, you just can’t get them first. Decay and disease must be addressed first so there is a strong foundation on which to build your smile makeover.
